    Course Description Water exercise is a fun way to work out! Participants will be led through a fun and energizing workout that can be modified at any point. Students will use equipment like noodles and hand-held buoys to do muscle strengthening movements in the water. The resistance of water offers exercise that can be gentle on the body but still as intense as exercising on land. This class is a perfect way to cross train, get an intense workout, or simply get some movement in for the day! Logistics The class location is at Summit Middle School Pool. Enter through door #20 and turn to the right to enter the pool area. Meet the instructor under the scoreboard prior to class.   • Group Adult Swimming Lessons

    Course Description: Anyone can learn to swim! This course is for anyone ages 18 and over who has the desire to learn basic swim skills. This class will also cater to those who know the basics but would like to become stronger swimmers or learn new strokes. Students will learn step by step how to float, swim, tread, and be water safe in this course. There are no prerequisites to joining this class. Logistics: Class will take place at Summit Middle School Pool in Johnston. Please enter the building through door #20. Students should bring goggles that do not cover the nose, swim suit, towel, and a water bottle. Do not bring any glass into the pool area. Students should shower off before entering the pool.   • Introduction to Competitive Swimming

    Course Description The Introduction to Competitive Swimming course bridges the gap between swimming lessons and competitive swim team. This class will teach the finer points of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, flip turns, and racing starts. Each class will focus on one or two skills per class to help students learn the skills needed for competitive swimming. Swimmers should come into the class being able to swim a minimum of 25 yards freestyle, 25 yards backstroke, and be comfortable in deep water. If parents are not sure their child is ready, please contact the Aquatics Coordinator to set up an evaluation prior to attending class. At the end of the class, the instructors will evaluate each student to determine if they are ready for swim team. Students may require multiple rounds of the class in order to be ready for swim team. Logistics Class is at Summit Middle School Pool. Enter through door #20 and the pool area is to the right. Bring goggles that do not cover the nose, a water bottle, competitive style swim suit, towel, and an optional swim cap.   • Junior Lifeguarding

    Course Description: Dive into a summer adventure with the Junior Lifeguarding camp at Summit Middle School Pool! This program is designed for future lifeguards eager to learn essential water safety and lifesaving skills. Participants will engage in a variety of fun and challenging activities that will not only boost their confidence in the water but also prepare them for future lifeguarding certification classes when they turn 15. Throughout the camp, junior lifeguards will master basic rescue techniques, improve their swimming abilities, and gain a deeper understanding of water safety protocols. While they won't receive a lifeguarding certification at the end of the camp, they will leave with invaluable skills and knowledge that will set them up for success in future. In order to participate fully in the class, students should be prepared to swim a water competency sequence of swimming and treading plus a 25yd front crawl and a 25yd breaststroke. Logistics: Enter Summit Pool through door #20. Bring light snacks, two towels, water bottle, sack lunch, flip flops, and two swim suits.   • Lap Swim

    Course Descriptions Participants can enjoy lap swimming, water walking, or self-guided exercise in Summit pool. Swimmers must stay in a designated lap swim lane and be prepared to share a lane if needed. Participants must be able to swim full lengths of the pool repetitively to participate. Participants can choose to pay a daily fee of $5 cash only per time OR register for a $90 season pass good for June-August 2025. Daily participants will need to sign the waiver before entering the pool each day. Logistics Location of lap swim is at Summit Middle School Pool. Summit Pool is located at 9500 Windsor Parkway Johnston IA 50131. Enter through door #20 and turn to the right to enter the pool area. Swimmers should bring their own equipment such as goggles, swim cap, towels, and water bottles. Lap swimmers may use noodles, kickboards, and pull buoys. The pool will be shared with swimming lessons, so please use only the designated lap swim lanes. There will be a manager and a lifeguard on duty. Bring your own swim suit, goggles, water bottle, and towel. Do not bring in glass bottles, glass containers, or glass goggles. All swimmers must shower off before entering the pool.     Course Descriptions: Level 1 swimming lessons is for students ages 5 years old and up to learn introductory swim skills such as getting face wet, blowing bubbles, floating, swimming two body lengths, introduction to treading water, kicking, gliding, and beginning to move independently through the water. The instructors will call students down to the pool deck and walk them to the class area. Parents should stay in the bleachers and be available to assist their child as needed.     Course Description Level 1 introduces swimmers to basic water skills for children 5 to 7 years old in order to build a foundation for more advanced skills in other levels. Students will learn kicking, gliding, floating, submerging under water, arm action on the front and back. It is common for children to have to repeat level 1 in order to do the skills successfully.     Course Descriptions: Level 2 swimmers must pass Level 1 requirements and float and swim independently. Swimmers will build off of the skills they learned previously and increase the distance they can swim and glide. Logistics: Students will enter Summit Pool through door #20.   • Level 2 Group Swimming Lessons

    Course Description Level 2 is where swimmers between ages 6 and 8 years old begin to learn independent water skills such as swimming on the front and back without support. Swimmers must be able to swim and then transition to a float or water tread seamlessly. Students will also swim to build endurance in this level. Logistics The class location is at Summit Middle School Pool. Enter through door #20 and turn to the right to enter the pool area. Parents should sit with their student in the bleachers until their name is called by the instructor. The instructor will walk the students to the class area.     Course Descriptions: Swimmers must pass Level 2 requirements and can float, swim, and tread independently. Swimmers will learn diving, elementary backstroke, dolphin kick, breaststroke kick.     Course Description Level 3 introduces new safety and swim skills such as elementary backstroke, scissor kick, and dolphin kicks for ages 7 to 14. Students will also learn head first entries into deep water, so it is necessary for students to have some comfort in deep water and has passed Level 2.     Course Description Level 4 is where students will learn to swim longer distances, butterfly, sidestroke, breaststroke, and turns. Swimmers will also refine the skills they learned in Level 3.     Course Descriptions: Level 4 and 5 swimmers must pass level 3 or 4 requirements and can swim and/or kick each stroke with accuracy. Swimmers will be asked to swim 25 or more yards and should come prepared to swim in deep water. Logistics: Students will enter Summit Pool through door #20. Swimmers should come to the pool and sit in the bleachers. The instructors will call students down to the pool deck and walk them to the class area.     Course Description Level 5 focuses on refining all six swim strokes while improving endurance. This level is great for swimmers interested in being on swim team or who want to become very strong swimmers. Logistics The class location is at Summit Middle School Pool.   • Lifeguard Certification Course

    Course Description: This course is for participants 15 and older who want to become a certified Lifeguard through the American Red Cross. Students will have to pass a pre-requisite swim of a distance swim, brick dive drill, and water tread. There is an online component to the course that needs to be completed prior to the first in-person class. Students must attend all class dates in full in and pass all required skills. Students must pass a final written test in person and pass the in water final skills in order to be successful in the course and achieve certification. Students who do not pass the prerequisite will receive a 50% refund. Students who do not pass later in the class will be issues only a 25% refund or a credit towards a future class. Logistics: Parents should provide an email for their student to the instructor prior to the registration deadline of April 23, 2025 at 11:59pm so the online course link can be sent to the student. The email address should be a personal account, not a school email. The instructor information is listed below. Students will have 1 week to complete their online course, which takes an average of 7 hours to complete. After successfully completing the online course, students should show proof of passing to the instructor on the first day of class.   • Lifeguard Prep Course

    Course Description: This class is for anyone interested in becoming a lifeguard. This class will prepare participants for the prerequisite swim, brick dive, and water tread. It will also help participants improve their strokes so they are within the course standards. This is not a lifeguard certification course and does not guarantee passing a lifeguard course. Logistics: Class is held at Summit Middle School Pool in Johnston 9500 Windsor Parkway. Enter the building through door #20. Students will need a towel, water bottle, goggles that do not cover the nose, and clothes to change into after class is over.
