ACT/SAT Practice Exam

Course Description Prepare students for college with an ACT or SAT College Prep Exam with Sylvan Learning Center. Trademarked ACT or SAT diagnostic exams are proctored and graded by Sylvan certified staff. Registration also includes a parent- consultation with Sylvan to help inform parents of next steps to further their students' growth. Logistics Timeframe Students participating in the ACT practice exam will finish at approximately 11:15am. Students participating in the SAT practice exam will finish at approximately 10:30am. Babysitting Basics

Course Description: The Babysitting Basics course from the American Red Cross gives participants a foundation on which to build a babysitting business. Designed for new babysitters, this course delivers information clearly, concisely and interactively – and it's the perfect way for young people to learn about all of the responsibilities that come with the job. The Babysitting Basics class covers a wide range of information that can help new babysitters gain the skills and confidence needed to care for infants and children. The course includes information on: How to care for infants and children What to do in an emergency and how to stay safe Choosing activities that are age appropriate Recognizing, understanding and handling certain behaviors Starting your babysitting business Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate that they can share with potential employers. This class will not fulfill the requirements for CPR, AED or First Aid certification. Beginning Guitar (Spring)

Course Description Join this dynamic course to learn a dynamite instrument! All {YEL!} guitar classes follow our basic components: Teach it!.. Players will learn the basics of music including reading music, rhythm, melody and meter. Practice It!.. Students will be provided musical exercises to reinforce basic concepts. Play It!.. Players will learn basic songs in various styles and there will be a mini-recital at the end of the session. Parent invited to attend. Let the music play! Logistics Students must provide a six-string guitar. Call (800) 959-9261 for recommendations for purchasing a guitar. Remind students to bring guitar to each class. Students who bring electric guitars should also bring their own amplifier. College Prep: ACT/SAT Boot Camp

Course Description This 4-hour boot camp introduces students to the format of the test, basic ACT/SAT test strategies, along with applied practice in English, Reading, Math, and Science. Course Description In celebration of Earth Day, students will become young inventors with a mission to protect the planet! They will explore sustainability and environmental science as they design and build projects like water filters, wind-powered machines, and upcycled inventions. Through creative problem-solving and hands-on challenges, kids will learn how science and engineering can help care for the Earth. Logistics The instructor will walk students out for parent pick-up at the end of class. Students should bring a sack lunch, labelled water bottle, and a snack. Instructor TigerLily STEM TigerLily STEM. TigerLily STEM has led fun and interactive camps and classes for thousands of students in the Des Moines area since 2017. They emphasize instruction through activities and have a ton of fun while learning about science, math, and technology. Kids Create Art Class: Duckling Squishmallows (with ducklings)

Course Description Students learn about the hatching process, design & paint a duck Squishmallow painting, enjoy the playground, and more. Rocket Workshop

Course Description Participants will enjoy a three-part rocket adventure featuring space-themed games, hands-on learning, and live launches. After exploring rocket basics—fins, nose cones, and aerodynamics—participants will build and launch their own rockets with guidance from four Johnston 8th grade students who were American Rocketry Challenge Finalists. All materials are provided. Logistics In order to ensure that each youth participant is able to complete all of the components of this workshop in the allotted timeframe, each youth participant must have an adult attend with them. One adult may accompany more than one youth participant. Youth + Adult pairs should select the $35 registration fee. Youth Only should select the $25 registration fee. ALL participants will be asked to identify the adult they are attending with during the registration process. All rocket materials are provided. In the “launching” block, the builders will launch the rocket they created with an air compressed launcher. Rocketeers will launch their rocket three times with an opportunity to make adjustments between launches. Instructors Janell Pittman and American Rocketry Challenge Finalists.
