  • Basketball: Family Open Gym Pass

    Course Description This open gym basketball pass is for families looking to have fun and get a workout in. Pre-registration is required online and no drop-in passes are allowed. Open gyms are determined by a minimum number (5) paid prior to the open gyms starting. GENERAL RULES- -Ages 6 and under are not allowed due to safety issues. Youth ages 15 and under must be directly supervised by a responsible adult (21 years and older). -Please bring your own basketball with your name on it. No other balls will be allowed to play with during open gym (no football, volleyball, baseball, softball, soccer, etc). -Full Court games are NOT allowed unless approved by supervisor. No organized practices allowed. Baskets can be lowered if needed. -No kicking or throwing basketballs during open gym. No half court shots. -Kids must be directly supervised.     This is a recreational basketball league that focuses on fun and participation. Participants are placed on random teams, practice one time per week, and play the games on Saturdays. Practices are limited to one hour. A Volunteer Coaches meeting is after the deadline with location/time announced later. Coaches can contact families with practice/game schedules after the meeting (also posted online). Jerseys are worn at each practice/game. Additional $17 fee if a jersey is needed. Teams are selected according to the questions asked during registration. No requests are taken to be with another child unless coaching together. Max of two coaches are allowed per team.   • Dragon Athletic Development Clinic

    Course Description This clinic is an intro into strength and conditioning program that emphasizes proper body weight exercises, weight lifting technique, core strength, flexibility, agility, speed, power and endurance. This program is designed to improve overall athletic ability that will enhance performance for all sports. Younger athletes will use little or no weight. PVC sticks will be used to perfect lifting technique.     Course Description This clinic provides young players with a variety of coaching styles, practices, and influences that will help them develop a well-rounded set of skills. Logistics Please bring a soccer ball (if you have one), water bottle with name, and clean, court shoes. Camp Director Eric Shafer, JHS Girls Varsity Soccer Head Coach -Coach Shafer has been the Johnston Girls Soccer Head Coach the past five seasons. Prior to leading the girls team, Coach Shafer assisted the Johnston Boys Soccer Team for four seasons. In Spring 2023, the Dragons won the Iowa High School Girls Class 3A State Championship and finished 16-4. Coach Shafer was named 2023 Large Public Iowa Coach of the Year with United Soccer Coaches and for the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. He currently teaches Physical Education at Johnston Middle School.

    Course Description Clinic is taught by the JHS Dancers and Coaches. Participants are broken up into age groups (PreK-K, Grades 1-2, Grades 3-5) and learn a dance to perform at the Johnston Dance Team End of Year Showcase. Dancers receive a Johnston Dance Team shirt to wear during their performance that begins at 6:00pm on Sunday, February 1st.     Course Description Grades K-2 Clinic: These lessons are an introduction into the game of tennis. The child learns forehands, backhands, volleys, and how to start the rally.     Course Description This early childhood program teachers the basic fundamentals of Tae Kwon Do and Karate.
