  • A Camping We Will Go

    Course Description: Students explore the outdoors through literacy, math, crafts and make believe in the classroom and outside on our playground. Get ready for some wilderness and camping fun together! Logistics: None Instructor: Abigail Oetken Ms. Abigail Oetken is a current Johnston Early Learning Academy teacher. She has her Iowa Teaching License in PK-3rd grade and Special Education. Ms. Abigail enjoys music, spending time with her family and teaching young learners.
  • Baby & Toddler Summer Music Camp

    Course Description In this FUN music class, little musicians (12-36 months) and their parents will sing, dance, and play instruments together. With puppets, books, and colorful props, it's a fun, interactive experience. Kids will explore various music styles while interacting with their parents. Perfect for the youngest musicians! Logistics All instruments and supplies will be provided. This is an adult-child class. An adult must attend with the registered child. The adult must be at least 16yrs old. We prefer it is the same adult each class but it is not required. Instructor: Julie Hendrickson The camp will be taught by Johnston music teacher, Julie Hendrickson. Julie has taught at Johnston for the past 20 years in both elementary and middle school. She currently teaches 6th and 7th grade choir at Summit Middle School. Julie also taught music at Gymboree Play and Music in Urbandale.
  • Camp Kindergarten

    Description: Camp Kindergarten is a one-day program for JCSD kindergarteners who have the day off from school following their first two days of class! Students will participate in a variety of fun and enriching camp-themed activities throughout the day. Logistics: Camp Kindergarten will take place at the District Office, 6510 NW 62nd Ave, Johnston, IA 50131 Drop-Off: 7:30-8:30am Camp Kindergarten: 8:30am-4:00pm Pick-Up: 4:00-5:30pm Students will be served a sack lunch (if needed) as well as morning and afternoon snacks. Students may bring their own sack lunch (it will not be able to be refrigerated). Students who need a sack lunch provided by the school district will be charged to their school lunch account. Snacks are included. Students should bring a water bottle with their name on it Students will be going outside (weather permitting) - please dress for the weather Instructor: Camp Kindergarten will be led by a variety of school district staff that are excited to spend the day with your student! Note: Camp Kindergarten is not part of the Kids Connection (KTC) program
  • Little Masterpieces

    Course Description: Calling all little artists! Campers will learn about and create one-of-a-kind art projects inspired by master artists like Vincent Van Gogh, Georgia O’Keeffe, Andy Warhol, and more! Please wear old clothes that can get messy since we will be using fun art materials such as paint and pastels. Logistics: Please wear old clothes that can get paint on them. Participants should bring a water bottle with their name on it. Instructor: Katie Black Katie Black is a K-12 certified art educator currently teaching art at Johnston High School. She loves the process of creativity and art-making with students of all ages and has previously taught at JMS, the Des Moines Art Center, and with Johnston Community Education.

    Course Description: Come dance, sing and make music together. Students will create instruments, listen to stories, engage in math experiences and dance together around the theme of music.   • Splish Splash Day

    Course Description: Get ready for a wet and wild time enjoying water! Students will enjoy water experiments, stories, songs and play running through water falls and playing in our water stream. Be sure to bring a swimsuit because students will get wet while learning about water together! Logistics: Participants should arrive alread dressed in their swimsuit. Bring a towel.
