  • Beekeeping 101

    For people who are new to beekeeping or are experienced and are seeking an additional foundational learning. Basic beekeeping topics covered in the text book (First Lessons in Beekeeping by Delaplane) include: honey bee biology and ecology, bee hive siting and set-up and how to start, management for honey production, harvesting products of the hive/business, off-season management, and disorders/parasites/predators. All students in Beekeeping 101 and 201 will receive a free copy of my Phenology Planner for Beekeepers. Course includes classroom time plus on-site hive inspection. Date and time of inspection to be determined. Notes for this class are available to purchase, $13!     Beekeeping 101 Notes: If you would like to purchase the presentation content delivered by our Beekeeping 101 instructor, this is your option to do that. The presentation slides will be emailed to you 48 hours prior to the start of the Beekeeping 101 class by Johnston Community Education. The presentation consists of approximately 100 PowerPoint slides. You will receive the file in a fillable-PDF format so that you have the option to print the notes and bring them with you OR bring a laptop to class and take notes right on the slides. This presentation was created by our instructor, Julia McGuire, for the Beekeeping 101 class. She hopes that the notes will be a great resource for participants after the class ends, but also requests that you not share the notes with others who have not taken the class.

    For beekeepers who have at least one winter (successful or unsuccessful) under their belt. Topics include splits, spring feeding, swarm and advanced colony management, and integrated pest management for varroa mites; includes at least one field day (TBD).   • Drawing Exploration

    The many ways to make marks on paper will be explored using three very different mark making tools. Cross hatching, shading and cartooning techniques will be used to draw still life objects in class. All levels of experience welcome. All supplies will be loaned to participants.   • Exploratory Beekeeping

    This course will present an overview of a beekeeper's year regarding labor, costs, and seasonal considerations; city bee laws, activities that will support pollinators whether you are a beekeeper or not, as well as providing other informational resources for continue learning. Find out what all the 'buzz' is about! NEW Parent/Child Option: Youth 10yrs and up are welcome to attend with an adult! (Adults bringing a child should be at least 18yrs old.     Once a Dragon, Forever a Dragon The Johnston Alumni Association is committed to growing and maintaining the relationships between JCSD alumni and the school district. It also aims to build school pride among alumni and the community. Donations to the Johnston Alumni Association are used in one of two ways: To provide a $500 scholarship awarded annually to a graduating JCSD student who is the child of JCSD alumni To support Johnston Alumni Association events and outreach The Johnston Alumni Association is operated by the Community Education Department of the Johnston Community School District. It is not an independent 501(c)3 not for profit organization and donations are not tax deductible.
