  • 7th Grade Weightlifting

    Course Description: This weightlifting class is open to all 7th graders, boys and girls. This beginner-friendly weightlifting class introduces students to proper technique, key lifts, and safe spotting practices. Participants learn the fundamentals of the squat, bench, deadlift, and clean while building confidence in the weight room. Clear expectations and strong safety standards guide the class, preparing students for a positive and productive weightlifting future. Goals: Introduce participants to weightlifting (no experience needed) Focus on technique, not amount of weight Learn fundamentals of squat, bench, deadlift, and clean Learn how to spot lifters safely Learn weight room expectations Prepare for middle school lifting Safety: Firm expectations will be set as safety is the highest priority in the weight room. If students cannot meet expectations, they will be asked to leave. Logistics: Class will take place in the Johnston High School Weight Room Enter/exit via door #5 on the west side of JHS (near the football stadium) Participants should wear workout gear and clean shoes Transportation: Transportation is NOT provided for this program. Participants are expected to get themselves to JHS for weightlifting after the school day ends. Instructor: Grant Bousum plus guidance from high school weight room staff Grant Bousum has been a high school football coach and assisting in the weight room for 23 years. He has worked closely in the weight room with Brian Lutter during the past four years at Johnston High School.
  • Dragon Beginners Indoor Soccer Clinic

    Course Description This clinic provides young players with a variety of coaching styles, practices, and influences that will help them develop a well-rounded set of skills. Logistics Please bring a soccer ball (if you have one), water bottle with name, and clean, court shoes. Camp Director Eric Shafer, JHS Girls Varsity Soccer Head Coach -Coach Shafer has been the Johnston Girls Soccer Head Coach the past five seasons. Prior to leading the girls team, Coach Shafer assisted the Johnston Boys Soccer Team for four seasons. In Spring 2023, the Dragons won the Iowa High School Girls Class 3A State Championship and finished 16-4. Coach Shafer was named 2023 Large Public Iowa Coach of the Year with United Soccer Coaches and for the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. He currently teaches Physical Education at Johnston Middle School.
  • Dragon Dance Clinic

    Course Description Clinic is taught by the JHS Dancers and Coaches. Participants are broken up into age groups (PreK-K, Grades 1-2, Grades 3-5) and learn a dance to perform at the Johnston Dance Team End of Year Showcase. Dancers receive a Johnston Dance Team shirt to wear during their performance that begins at 6:00pm on Sunday, February 1st. Logistics Bring a water bottle with your name on it if needed No snacks are provided Wear clean, dry tennis shoes and comfortable clothing to the clinic PERFORMANCE/SHOWCASE INFORMATION: When: Sunday, February 1st - Door #19 at JMS is open at 5:30pm for 6pm start time at Johnston Middle School What to Wear: Black pants or shorts, clinic shirt and dance/tennis shoes. All spectators and participants are allowed into the show- free will donation! Participants sit in the bleachers with their parents and will be excused prior to their performance.     Course Description The Creighton Women's Soccer Coaches will lead participants through training to get players ready for the season. This camp’s goal is to prepare high school girls for the demands of the upcoming season, both physically and mentally. Camp sessions will focus on physical, technical, tactical, and psychological training. This camp is open for any and all Iowa girls high school soccer players. Jim Frizzell, JHS Boys Varsity Soccer Head Coach -Coach Frizzell has 8 years of head coaching experience, starting at Urbandale HS (2016-2020) and now at JHS since 2021. He was an assistant coach at Simpson College from 2011-2022. In Spring 2023, the Dragons won the Iowa High School Boys State Championship. He was named 2023 Large Public Iowa Coach of the Year for both NFHS and IAHSSCA. He has also won CIML Conference Championships at Urbandale (2017, 2018, 2022) and at Johnston (2023).
  • Dragon Indoor Softball Clinic: Fielding

    Course Description JHS Head Softball Coach Kendal Clark, along with her coaching staff and players, will be working with the participants illustrating fundamental skills and drills. The players and staff are excited to meet the young players and families in the community to discuss softball mechanics, fundamentals, and philosophies. Mark it on your calendar, come out, and get a jump on your softball season! This camp is open to everyone regardless of what school or where you live. Strong defense comes from repetition, awareness, and learning how to read the game. Day 1: Fundamentals—glove work, footwork, throwing mechanics, and basic position drills. Day 2: Advanced plays—range work, double plays, cut-offs, communication, and real-speed defensive situations. The progression from basic skill-building to game-speed scenarios helps athletes become confident, reliable defenders. Logistics Wear clean, dry shoes, comfortable clothing and bring your glove. Some gloves will be provided as needed. Cage masks are optional to wear. Only tennis shoes are allowed indoors, no cleats.     Course Description JHS Head Softball Coach Kendal Clark, along with her coaching staff and players, will be working with the participants illustrating fundamental skills and drills. The players and staff are excited to meet the young players and families in the community to discuss softball mechanics, fundamentals, and philosophies. Mark it on your calendar, come out, and get a jump on your softball season! This camp is open to everyone regardless of what school or where you live. Good hitters need both solid technique and consistent in-game adjustments. Day 1: Will teach stance, swing path, timing, and contact fundamentals. Day 2: Will build on that foundation with situational hitting, pitch recognition, power generation, and live-pitch reps. Day 2 is essential as players can only apply advanced skills once the basics are locked in. Logistics Wear clean, dry shoes, comfortable clothing and bring your bat and batting helmet. Some bats will be provided as needed. Due to health reasons, batting helmets are required. Cage masks are optional to wear. Only tennis shoes are allowed indoors, no cleats.     Course Description JHS Head Softball Coach Kendal Clark, along with her coaching staff and players, will be working with the participants illustrating fundamental skills and drills. The players and staff are excited to meet the young players and families in the community to discuss softball mechanics, fundamentals, and philosophies. Mark it on your calendar, come out, and get a jump on your softball season! This camp is open to everyone regardless of what school or where you live. Day 1: Focus is on form, footwork, grips, release points, receiving, blocking, and basic battery communication. Day 2: Advance to accuracy, power, pitch strategy, game situations, and pitcher-catcher coordination. Logistics Wear clean, dry shoes, comfortable clothing and bring your glove, bat, and batting helmet if you have one. Some bats and gloves will be provided as needed. Due to health issues- catching gear is required for the catching portion and batting helmets are required. Pitchers should have a catcher available if possible. Cage masks are optional to wear. Only tennis shoes are allowed indoors, no cleats.   • Dragon Performance Training

    Course Description Dragon Performance Training helps youth athletes improve their physical abilities, so that they can have the best sports performance possible. By focusing on speed and strength as well as injury prevention, we can create positive results in each athlete. Each athlete will be tested with different metrics at the start and end of the month using Dashr technology. This technology will provide athletes with their speed in MPH, their vertical jump, and their pro agility times. The instructor tailors performance training for the student athletes.
