    For students 5th-8th grade, the 4-H Babysitting Clinic will give you the skills to become a great babysitter. Babysitting is an important job and can sometimes be scary if you don’t know what to expect. We’ll cover all of the skills and help you learn the ropes to be successful on the job! We will cover the following:caring for infants and young children, development traits of ages 0-5, safe cooking skills and safe meal prep, what to do in an emergency, basic first aid, what to ask before parents leave, what parents expect from you, activity ideas, & how to make babysitting a business. Instructor: Iowa State University Extension & Outreach – Polk County

  • Camp Brainiac

    Camp Brainiac is a full-day summer day camp that welcomes elementary school age kids 6-12! Camp Brainiac gives kids a break from the classroom but not necessarily from learning. Planned and run by Iowa licensed teachers, Brainiac campers will spend their days immersed in experiential learning with new activities each session. Campers have plenty of outdoor and free time to burn off energy too. This isn't like REAL summer school!   • Clay Camp: Garden Crawlers Gr K-2

    In this camp, we will meet daily to explore all the creepy, crawly, and cute creatures we might find in our gardens. We will use squishy clay to make caterpillars, owls, ladybugs, platters, rainbows, planters, and more! We will get a little dirty, learn new building techniques, and have lots of fun playing with clay. Our projects will be fired in a kiln and Amy will email parents with a pick-up date.   • Destination Mars Rocketry

    Launch and watch your very own rocket speed 300 feet into the air! Then it is yours to take home! Students will make and take home multiple rockets of varying difficulty throughout this session. We will use these rockets and airplanes to investigate basic aeronautical concepts including: propulsion, thrust, lift, drag and more. We will also hypothesize about travel in outer space, how to get a United States astronaut to Mars and life on Mars. Do you have the right stuff? NOTE: Parents will be asked to contribute two, 2 liter soda bottles (empty) for 2 different experiments.Instructor: Youth Enrichment League

The skills learned in building and programming the LEGO EV3 robot are specifically designed to translate into FIRST LEGO League (FLL) success for teams and team members moving onto a FLL team in the fall. We’ll learn the basics of driving straight, turning, and even coding responsive programs using a variety of EV3 sensors. We will be building and programming runs on an official 2018/19 “Into Orbit” FLL robot mat.This class will prepare your student to join and thrive on an FLL team in the fall when the new 2019/20 FLL season begins. Our first hour each day is dedicated to the fundamentals of flute playing followed by two hours of flute choir rehearsing! Coached and conducted by professional flutist, Amanda Johns Barro, an alumna of the Johnston School District who has received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Flute Performance. A combined performance for family and friends will be held on Friday, July 12th at 4:30pm lasting approximately an hour.The fee includes cost of the workshop, music, and a t-shirt coordinated by the group. Each {YEL!} Chess class follows four basic components: •Teach It!…Each class students are taught different chess concepts and coached to implement those concepts into their chess games •Practice It!…Students practice positions set by the coach to improve their understanding of the concept. •Puzzle It!… Students are given chess puzzles (constructed by WIM Serafima Sokolovskaya) and work with coach guidance to solve them. •Play It!Each class ends with students playing 20-30 minutes of chess.
