  • Basketball- Family Open Gym

    Please take the time to register online for this program. Register only once per season- and attend as much as you like. Once you are registered, you are on our check-in list. The purpose of this registration: - JCE has your contact information so we can communicate any changes to open gym dates/times - Your emergency contact information is stored within our system - Tracks the interest and attendance easier -Day Pass- $5 paid per child at the gym door, still need to sign in GENERAL RULES- -Ages 6 and under are not allowed due to safety issues. Youth ages 15 and under must be directly supervised by a responsible adult (21 years and older). -Please bring your own basketball with your name on it. No other balls will be allowed to play with during open gym (no football, volleyball, baseball, softball, soccer, etc). -Full Court games are NOT allowed unless approved by supervisor due to lower numbers. No organized practices allowed. Baskets can be lowered if needed. -No kicking or throwing basketballs during open gym. No half court shots. -Kids must be directly supervised so nobody will be allowed in the hallway unless getting a drink or using the restroom.

    Basketball jerseys are required to play in our Johnston Youth Basketball League that runs in November-February. Cost is $17. Please purchase if you don't already have one.

    Participants are placed on teams according to the registration questions and randomly. All games take place on Saturday mornings and/or early afternoons depending on the # of teams. Teams practice and play on Saturdays only at a Johnston Elementary School. Parent volunteer coaches are needed for each team. Two coaches are allowed per team. Lesson plans and rules are given to the coaches. Coaches meeting is- Date/Time To Be Determined. All players must have a reversible JYB jersey.     Participants are placed on teams according to the registration questions and randomly. All games take place on Saturday mornings and/or early afternoons depending on the # of teams. Early Registration Deadline ends 10/15/2024 at 12pm. Price increases to $110 with final deadline on 11/1/2024 at 12pm. Teams practice one night each week at a Johnston Elementary School. Practices are determined at the Coaches' Meeting. Schedules are sent out after. Practices are limited to one hour and start on Saturday, November 9, then during the week. Games begin on Saturday, December 7. 8-Game Season ends Saturday, February 1. No practices or games are held on November 30 or December 28. Coaches meeting is- Date/Time To Be Determined.   • Chess Tournament

    Course Description: This is a fantastic opportunity for students to match up their chess skills against players of similar age and skill level. Each participant will play SIX GAMES OF TOURNAMENT CHESS! Participants should have participated in at least one YEL Chess program beofre participating in a YEL Chess Tournament. Logistics: Participants should have participated in at least one YEL Chess program beofre participating. The best 4 scores from each school are combined to get the total team score. The school with the highest combined score will receive the TEAM CHAMPION TROPHY. Trophies will be awarded for Champions and Runner-Up. Individual Tournament: Students will play 6 games against students of similar grade level. YEL reserves the option to combine or separate grade levels based on the number of participants. Swiss Play: Participants are matched against others of similar skill level and grade. If a player wins more games, they will play other players who have won more often as well. By the 6th round, a clear champion will emerge. Medals & Trophies: Trophies are given out to 1st - 5th place in each grade level category. Medals are given out based on performance. Every student will get either a trophy or a medal by the end of the day. This is a CXR rated tournament and official USCF rules will apply. Many games use clocks. USCF tiebreaker rules will be used.   • Indoor Kayaking Class

    DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION IS FEBRUARY 14 AT 12PM. Course Description The weather outside may be frightful but the indoor pool is delightful, and a perfect spot to do some Indoor Kayaking! Join a Polk County Conservation Naturalist as they give participants a short water safety talk, cover some basic kayak techniques, and then hit the pool for some hands on paddling. All equipment, instruction, and lifeguards are provided. Each class is limited to 10 participants per class.   • Winter Break Magiclass

    Course Description: The holidays are a MAGICAL time of year! Magiclass will teach participants how to entertain & amaze friends, family, and classmates with magic that can be done anywhere, at any time and for years to come. Join professional magician Lee Cole for a day of fun! Logistics: All magic materials provided. Each student will recieve a deck of cards included in the registration fee. Participants should bring a water bottle and a snack if desired. Juggling balls will be available for purchase, $10 cash (optional). Instructor: Professional magician: Lee Cole. When Lee isn’t running Magicamps, he’s performing on cruise ships, at casinos, for Fortune 500 companies, and in comedy clubs as far away as Australia.
