  • Babysitting Basics

    Course Description: The Babysitting Basics course from the American Red Cross gives participants a foundation on which to build a babysitting business. Designed for new babysitters, this course delivers information clearly, concisely and interactively – and it's the perfect way for young people to learn about all of the responsibilities that come with the job. The Babysitting Basics class covers a wide range of information that can help new babysitters gain the skills and confidence needed to care for infants and children. The course includes information on: How to care for infants and children What to do in an emergency and how to stay safe Choosing activities that are age appropriate Recognizing, understanding and handling certain behaviors Starting your babysitting business Safely preparing a healthy snack The Babysitting Basics course culminates with a final exam. Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate that they can share with potential employers.     CORRECTION FROM THE PROGRAM GUIDE- THIS PROGRAM RUNS THROUGH 1/26/2025 AND IS DONE. Please take the time to register online for this program. Register only once and attend as much as you like. Once you are registered, you are on our check-in list. The purpose of this registration: - JCE can communicate any changes to open gym dates/times - Your emergency contact information is stored within our system - Tracks the interest and attendance easier -Day Pass- $5 (CASH ONLY) paid at the gym door, still need to sign in GENERAL RULES- -Ages 6 and under are not allowed due to safety issues. Youth ages 15 and under must be directly supervised by a responsible adult (21 years and older). -Please bring your own basketball with your name on it. No other balls will be allowed to play with during open gym (no football, volleyball, baseball, softball, soccer, etc). -Full Court games are NOT allowed unless approved by supervisor due to lower numbers. No organized practices allowed. Baskets can be lowered if needed. -No kicking or throwing basketballs during open gym. No half court shots. -Kids must be directly supervised so nobody will be allowed in the hallway unless getting a drink or using the restroom.

Teams practice and play on Saturdays only at a Johnston Elementary School. Parent volunteer coaches are needed for each team. Two coaches are allowed per team. Lesson plans and rules are given to the coaches. Coaches meeting is- Date/Time To Be Determined. All players must have a reversible JYB jersey. Whether a beginner looking to build strong habits or an advanced player aiming for more precision, these sessions are tailored to each individual's goals. Semi-private lessons focus on building the essential skills needed to become a confident and consistent shooter. Minimum is 2 kids with maximum of 6. Open for boys and girls.   • Dragon Indoor Soccer Clinic

    Course Description This clinic provides young players with a variety of coaching styles, practices, and influences that will help them develop a well-rounded set of skills. Logistics Please bring a soccer ball (if you have one), water bottle with name, and clean, court shoes. Camp Directors Eric Shafer, JHS Girls Varsity Soccer Head Coach -Coach Shafer has been the Johnston Girls Soccer Head Coach the past four seasons. Prior to leading the girls team, Coach Shafer assisted the Johnston Boys Soccer Team for four seasons. In Spring 2023, the Dragons won the Iowa High School Girls Class 3A State Championship and finished 16-4. Coach Shafer was named 2023 Large Public Iowa Coach of the Year with United Soccer Coaches and for the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. He currently teaches Physical Education at Johnston Middle School. Coach Shafer has previously coached Johnston Football and Johnston Girls Basketball. Jim Frizzell, JHS Boys Varsity Soccer Head Coach -Coach Frizzell has 8 years of head coaching experience, starting at Urbandale HS (2016-2020) and now at JHS since 2021. He was an assistant coach at Simpson College from 2011-2022. In Spring 2023, the Dragons won the Iowa High School Boys State Championship. He was named 2023 Large Public Iowa Coach of the Year for both NFHS and IAHSSCA. He has also won CIML Conference Championships at Urbandale (2017, 2018, 2022) and at Johnston (2023).
  • Dragon Soccer: Girls HS Pre-Season Camp

    Course Description This camp is led by Northwest Missouri State University Women's Soccer Coaches. They will lead participants through training to get players ready for the season. This camp’s goal is to prepare high school girls for the demands of the upcoming season, both physically and mentally. Camp sessions will focus on physical, technical, tactical, and psychological training. This camp is open for any and all Iowa girls high school soccer players. Logistics Bring warmer clothing and outdoor soccer shoes just in case the camp goes outside. Camp Director Marc Gordon- NW Missouri State Head Women's Soccer Coach • Led Northwest to its first two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2021 and 2022 • Compiled a 113-38-15 record in eight seasons at Ottawa University • Won three KCAC regular season titles and four tournament titles • Qualified for the NAIA Final Tournament site twice in 2016 and 2017 Marc earned his master's degree in Sport Management/Administration from the United State Sports Academy. He holds multiple licenses with the United States Soccer Federation and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Gordon came to Northwest after serving as the Director of Soccer and head women's coach at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kan., since 2010. Quaid Curtain- NW Missouri State Assistant Women's Soccer Coach Quaid is fulfilling the duties as Assistant Coach for Bearcat Soccer. Holding his United States Soccer Federation E license, United Soccer Coaches GK1 Diploma, Quaid has gained various amounts of experience by working camps for The University of Missouri, Kansas Rush, Kansas Elite Soccer Club, Elkhorn High Schools, and by serving as the Camp Director for Bearcat Soccer since 2015.

    Course Description Coach Rich Calvert, along with his coaching staff and players from the Johnston High School squad, will be working with the participants illustrating fundamental skills and drills in hitting, fielding, and throwing. They are excited to meet the young players and their parents in the community to discuss softball mechanics, fundamentals, and philosophies. There will be hands-on help from many of the current players as they work on the skills right along with you. Mark it on your calendar, come out and get a jump on your softball season!     Course Description: Step into the world of innovation with the Engineering Explorers class! Participants will tackle exciting design challenges that encourage creativity and critical thinking. From building bridges to creating roller coasters, students will work in teams to brainstorm, prototype, and test their designs using everyday materials. Each session focuses on engineering principles like structure, force, and motion, all while fostering collaboration and problem-solving skills.     Course Description: In FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Explore, students focus on the fundamentals of LEGO engineering as they explore real-world problems, learn and design basic code, and create unique solutions made with LEGO bricks and powered by LEGO Education WeDo 2.0. Teams of up to 6 students, led by parent-volunteer coaches, will meet 1 day each week for up to 1 hour. During these team "practices", teams will work together to develop a solution and model related to the current season's theme. The current season theme is "Submerged". Teams will explore the layers of the ocean and bring their learnings and ideas to the surface as they “sea” into the future. The season culminates with an FLL Explore Expo where each team will present their unique solution, model and learning. The Winter/Spring 2025 Expo is scheduled for Thursday, April 17 at 6:00pm. (Parents are invited to attend!) Logistics: All teams will practice on Thursday evenings at 6:15pm at JCSD facilities. Registration Deadline: Sunday, January 26 Tentative Coaches Meeting: Thursday, Feb 6 at 5:30pm Teams will be contacted by parent-volunteer coaches by Sunday, February 9 Practices begin Thursday, February 13 at 6:15pm. (Teams will practice for approximately 45-50min.) Practice locations will be determined after team rosters are created and volunteer coaches are assigned. Instructor: This program is dependent on parent-volunteers to operate. Rosters are limited to 6 students. That means we need to identify a Head Coach and ideally 2 Assistant Coaches for every six student team. A MINIMUM of 2 adults (Coach + Assistant Coach) are required to be on-site to safely supervise each practice. No LEGO or robotics experience is necessary. FLL and Community Education will provide all of the materials and support necessary to guide teams through each practice. With small rosters - all parents should consider how they can volunteer to support the team.

    DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION IS FEBRUARY 14 AT 12PM. Course Description The weather outside may be frightful but the indoor pool is delightful, and a perfect spot to do some Indoor Kayaking! Join a Polk County Conservation Naturalist as they give participants a short water safety talk, cover some basic kayak techniques, and then hit the pool for some hands on paddling. All equipment, instruction, and lifeguards are provided. Each class is limited to 10 participants per class.
