    Private Band Lessons with Jennifer Tylavsky

    Course Description Participants will receive personalized instruction towards continued growth in band. Dig into the finer details of performing on individual instruments. Students will work out of a lesson book to build up fundamental playing, or on honor band and all-state audition materials. Each lesson is 30 minutes in length. 1 student per timeslot. No make up lessons. Exception: If the instructor cancels a lesson for some reason - that lesson will be rescheduled. Lessons that participants fail to show up for will not be rescheduled. If students have a schedule conflict due to attending a Dragon band camp, an alternate lesson time can be arranged with the instructor for that week only. Logistics Students must provide their own instrument. Instructor: Jennifer Tylavsky Jennifer Tylavsky has been teaching instrumental music for 31 years, the last three here in Johnston. She enjoys helping students grow as musicians and people. She also loves hiking, reading, and spending time with her family.
  • Private Piano or Vocal Lessons with Rylie Shettler

    Course Description: Students can choose PIANO or VOICE lessons! Voice Lessons (students entering 8th-12th grade only): Participants will receive personalized instruction that helps them strengthen technique, musicality, and build repertoire. Students will work one-on-one with the instructor to choose songs, as well create goals specific to their needs. Piano Lessons (students entering 1st-12th grade): Students will develop musical confidence through the theory and ear training provided by piano instruction. Reading music and developing performance proficiency will be the primary focus of lessons, while more advanced students will dig into the finer details of theory and performing. Instructor: Rylie Shettler Rylie Shettler is an accompanist for 6th and 7th grade choirs at Summit Middle School as well JHS’s Bella Voce. She has her Bachelor’s degree in music performance with an emphasis on voice. Rylie has years of previous experience teaching lessons and loves helping students find their voice and build upon their own unique strengths!

Course Description Whether a quicker first step is needed, a faster change of direction, or improved footwork - working on speed and agility with Patrick Jackson will help each child get there! This clinic will focus on explosion, bursts, turn over and top end speed. Logistics Enter through Door #9 Bring water bottle/jug with name on it Instructor Patrick Jackson was a football and track star at Coe College. As a defensive back for the Kohawk football team, Patrick was a two-time, First Team All-Iowa Conference honoree. He was named to the All-West Region first team by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette in 2002. With 213 career tackles, he is tied for ninth in school history with seven interceptions in 2001. He tied a school record with three career blocked kicks. In track, Patrick was a two-time All-American as a member of the 4x100-meter relay team, which finished fifth at the NCAA Championships in 2002 and 2003. After graduating, Patrick played semi-pro football for 12 years with the Sioux City Bandits, Cedar Valley Vikings, Iowa Lightning, and North Iowa Bucks, which inducted him into its hall of fame in 2016.

He is an elementary teacher, a fourth Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo, Fifth Degree Black Belt Karate, and a 3-time Martial Arts Hall of Fame Inductee.

The class will be played on a 36-foot court, with a small net, red balls, and 21-inch racquets. Racquets are provided if needed. Grades 3-5: BEGINNER- In a 4-day session there will be a different theme each day: forehand, backhand, serve return, and volley. The final practice will be spent learning how to play a real match including scoring. The main focus is on having fun, sportsmanship, learning tennis, and improving skills. Orange balls will be used with 23-25-inch racquets. Racquets are provided if needed. INTERMEDIATE- This is for players that have or are interested in playing matches. The player should be able to serve and rally 3 balls in a row. The focus is going to be on offense and defense with an understanding of shot selection. There will be an emphasis on grip changes, spins, placement and consistency. Orange balls are used with 25 inch racquets. Racquets are provided if needed. Grades 6-12: BEGINNER- The focus will be on learning the basics of tennis while having fun! In a 4 day session there will be a different theme each day: forehand, backhand, serve return, and volley. The final practice will be spent learning how to play a real match including scoring. The main focus is on having fun, sportsmanship, learning tennis, fitness and improving skills. INTERMEDIATE- ADVANCE- This is for players that have played matches and are looking to play matches/tournaments this summer. The player should be able to serve and rally 3 balls in a row.     Course Description The transparency of watercolor is what gives it such beauty! Learning basic watercolor techniques in this two-part workshop will help participants achieve the desired look of finished paintings. Logistics Instructor provides quality tools and supplies to use in the workshop. Participants take home two paintings each day. Instructor: Kathy Esch Kathy E. Esch, BFA, CA, has been teaching Community Education classes for 24 years. A skilled sign painter of 18 years and commercial artist, she turned to fine art and art education. Skilled in drawing pet portraits, painting with watercolor, acrylic and oil paints, favoring the natural world, especially trees.
