    Course Description Working with a variety of materials, particpants will explore a new form of craft each day! Participants will work with yarn to create small baskets, create their very own sketchbooks, and make colored handmade paper from recycled materials! Participants will learn about various artists that use these methods of creating as inspiration. Logistics All art materials provided Instructor Kenzie Lindsey Kenzie is an art teacher at JHS where she teaches Drawing, Digital Photography and Art of Craft. She has experience teaching all age groups and working with a variety of materials. Her favorite art related things are knitting, taking photos, and creating collages.

    Baby & Toddler Summer Music Camp

    Course Description This fun music class is geared to the youngest musicians and their parents! Little ones will sing, bounce, dance, listen, and play percussion instruments. There will be puppets, books, and colorful props to make this a fun interactive time for parent and child. Children will experience music from all around the world- from The Beach Boys to Bach! Logistics All instruments and supplies will be provided. This is an adult-child class. An adult must attend with the registered child. The adult must be at least 16yrs old. We prefer it is the same adult each class but it is not required. Instructor: Julie Hendrickson This camp will be taught by Johnston music teacher, Julie Hendrickson. Julie has taught at Johnston for the past 19 years in both elementary and middle school. She currently teaches 6th and 7th grade choir at Summit Middle School. Julie also taught music at Gymboree Play and Music in Urbandale.
  • Bam Bam Baseball Clinic

    Course Description This clinic is designed to give the children an opportunity to get a feel for the game of baseball and softball. The main purpose is to teach children to hit the ball, run the bases, become familiar with being on the field, and most of all to have FUN. No score is kept. Every player hits in every inning. This program is coached by parent volunteers and supervised by JCE Staff.     Barbie & Ken Kicking Off the Summer

    Course Description Enjoy a week of fun with Ken and Barbie! Participants will learn how to be empowered leaders through Barbie-themed play, games, books and crafts. Early Childhood camps and classes are optional summer enrichment opportunities and not affiliated with JELA preschool. Logistics Please have your child bring a backpack with a water bottle and and extra set of play clothes. Please dress your child in comfortable play clothes for this time of engaged learning.   • Basketball- Family Open Gym

    Please take the time to register online for this program. Register only once per season- and attend as much as you like. Once you are registered, you are on our check-in list. The purpose of this registration: - JCE has your contact information so we can communicate any changes to open gym dates/times - Your emergency contact information is stored within our system - Tracks the interest and attendance easier -Day Pass- $5 paid per child at the gym door, still need to sign in GENERAL RULES- -Ages 6 and under are not allowed due to safety issues. Youth ages 15 and under must be directly supervised by a responsible adult (21 years and older). -Please bring your own basketball with your name on it. No other balls will be allowed to play with during open gym (no football, volleyball, baseball, softball, soccer, etc). -Full Court games are NOT allowed unless approved by supervisor due to lower numbers. No organized practices allowed. Baskets can be lowered if needed. -No kicking or throwing basketballs during open gym. No half court shots. -Kids must be directly supervised so nobody will be allowed in the hallway unless getting a drink or using the restroom.

  • Battle Drones

    Course Description Battle Drones features an exciting combination of aerial acrobatics and engineering design challenges that teaches students STEM concepts, teamwork, and how to skillfully fly a drone. In Battle Drones, teams of students will build robotic launchers designed to fling projectiles at opponents’ drones. Students will be guided by experienced camp instructors in how to construct projectile launchers to maximize speed and accuracy. The camp culminates in an epic battle where students attempt to pilot drones to safety by successfully dodging opponent projectiles while attempting to take down opponent drones. The best drone pilots and launchers will emerge victorious! Students have the option to purchase a drone to take home at the end of camp for $50 (approximately a $100 value). Registration deadline to purchase drone with camp registration: June 23.     Course Description It's Christmas... in June! Come make gift-quality Christmas related crafts in this fun art camp. Participants will explore materials like wood, fiber, and paint. Projects this year will include (subject to change based on time and material availability): 3rd-7th Grade, Mon/Wed Camp: puppets, wooden block snowmen, Christmas lights string art, twig trees, and pom pom wreaths. 5th-10th Grade, Tue/Thu Camp: Russian nesting dolls, A-frame wooden ornament trees, snowflake string art, and handmade rope garlands. Logistics All materials included 3rd-7th Grade, Mon/Wed Camp: Students must be able to independently tie knots in yarn 5th-10th Grade: Tue/Thu Camp: Participants will use real tools like hammers, nails, and a screw gun in this class.     Course Description Creative Movement is for dancers 3-4 years old. Participants begin exploring movement as a fun form of creative communication and also introduce youngsters to the concept of moving with the music.
