FIRST LEGO League: Explore

Youth / Youth Courses -
Winter 2023

In FIRST LEGO League (FLL): Explore, students focus on the fundamentals of LEGO engineering as they explore real-world problems, learn and design basic code, and create unique solutions made with LEGO bricks and powered by LEGO Education WeDo 2.0. Teams of up to 6 students, led by parent-volunteer coaches, will meet 1 day each week for up to 1 hour. During these team "practices", teams will work together to develop a solution and model related to the current season's theme. This year's theme is "Super Powered". Students will explore where energy comes from and how it is distributed, stored, and used to work to innovate for a better energy future. The season culminates with an "FLL: Explore Expo" where each team will present their unique solution, model and learning.

  • All teams will practice on Tuesday evenings at 6:00pm at JCSD facilities.
  • Practice locations will be determined after team rosters are created and volunteer coaches are assigned.
  • Registration Deadline: Sunday, January 29, 2023
  • Tentative Coaches Meeting: Tuesday, February 7 at 6:00pm
  • Teams will be contacted by parent-volunteer coaches AFTER the Coaches Meeting is held. (Approximately Feb 8-9)
  • Practices begin Tuesday, February 14 at 6:00pm. Most teams practice approximately 45-50min.
  • Date and time of the end-of-season expo event is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, April 18 at 6:00pm.

This program is dependent on parent-volunteers to operate.

  • Rosters are limited to 6 students.
  • Each team MUST have a Head Coach AND an Assistant Coach to safely supervise each practice session.
  • That means we need to identify a Head Coach and ideally 2 Assistant Coaches for every six students. A MINIMUM of 2 adults (Coach + Assistant Coach) are required to be on-site to supervise each practice.
  • No LEGO or robotics experience is necessary.
    • FLL provides materials to guide teams through each practice.
    • All projects should be student-driven
    • Coaching an FLL: Explore team is more similar to guiding a group of students through a class-project than it is to coaching a sports team.
  • Considering the small roster size (6 students), ALL parents should consider how they can volunteer to support the team.
  • If we are unable to secure enough volunteer coaches to lead each team, students will be placed on teams in the order that they registered.
    • Example: If we have 24 students register but only enough volunteer coaches for 3 teams, the the 6 students that registered latest will NOT be placed on a team and will receive a refund.
