FIRST LEGO League: Challenge

Youth / Youth Courses -
Fall 2022

In FIRST LEGO League (FLL): Challenge, friendly competition is at the heart of the program. Teams of students engage in research, problem-solving, coding, and engineering - building and programming a LEGO robot that navigates the missions of a robot game. Teams of 6-8 students, led by parent-volunteer coaches, will meet up to 2 days each week for up to 1 hour. During these team "practices", teams will work together to design, build, and code their robot. Teams will also practice FLL core values while developing a unique solution to a real-world issue related to the current season's theme. This year's theme is "Super Powered". Students will explore where energy comes from and how it is distributed, stored, and used to work to innovate for a better energy future. The season culminates with an FLL: Regional Qualifier event (Date and Time TBD) where teams have the opportunity to compete with other FLL teams.

  • NEW for the Fall 2022 season: Students should register according to the practice schedule that best fits their availability. (Please note that we do NOT have coaches pre-assigned to these teams. After a team roster is full - we will need to identify a parent-volunteer to serve as Head Coach and 2 Assistant Coached from each team roster of 6-8 students.)
  • All teams will practice at the JCSD District Office, 6510 NW 62nd Ave, Johnston, IA 50131
  • Registration Deadline: Sunday, August 28 (Fee increases to $125 on Aug 29)
  • Coaches Meeting to be held the week of Sept 5-9
  • Teams will be contacted by parent-volunteer coaches following the coaches meeting.
  • Practices will begin the week of September 12.

This program is dependent on parent-volunteers to operate. Rosters are limited to 6-8 students. That means we need to identify a Head Coach and 2 Assistant Coaches for every 6-8 students. A MINIMUM of 2 adults (Coach + Assistant Coach) are required to be on-site to supervise each practice. No LEGO or robotics experience is necessary. FLL provides materials to guide teams through each practice and all projects should be student-driven. With small rosters - all parents should consider how they can volunteer to support the team.

The only way to guarantee a roster spot is to register for an existing team with open roster spots.

  • If the team with the only practice schedule that works for your student is full - add your name to the waitlist. IF enough students join the waitlist, we will TRY to find additional space for a new team to practice at that time. This is NOT a guaranteed option.
  • Students are NOT allowed to be on a team roster AND a waitlist for a different team at the same time.
  • If a team registration does NOT meet the minimum of 6 students at the registration deadline, we will contact those students and provide the available options for moving to a new team. Students will have the choice to move to a team that has met the minimum registration or receive a refund.
